Volunteers help save lives in outlying areas by being there quickly when the alarm sounds. Now sponsorship from Emmelev A/S ensures that the volunteers in Broby can see and be seen in the dark times.
The emergency responders, who go out on a voluntary basis and provide first aid and life-saving treatment in the Broby area near Odense, now have better opportunities to cope in the winter darkness.
Emmelev A/S has just sponsored headlamps for all 15 emergency workers in the area as agreed with one of them, Mark Jørgensen. He is an employee in the production at Emmelev A/S in Otterup and is responsible for, among others delivering rapeseedcakes to customers.
"Now we can see in the dark - and be seen," says Mark Jørgensen, who is happy that this workplace will contribute to the voluntary efforts provided in Broby.
MarkJørgensen has just completed an extended first aid course in, among other things, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, measuring blood sugar, first aid forforeign substance in the throat and the use of first aid equipment such as use of oxygen apparatus and defibrillator. He has not yet been called to an emergency situation, which is positive in itself. Conversely, he looks forward to being able to make an effort and help save lives.
Emergencysituations can arise around the clock. Therefore, the volunteers must also be prepared to be activated 24/7. When they go out, they themselves bring the needed equipment, and they are always dressed in yellow jackets with reflectors that make their function visible.
MarkJørgensen says: I have driven a truck for many years and have experienced many accident situations on the roads where immediate help was needed. In theoutlying areas, it can take a while for an ambulance to reach the scene -probably an extra ten minutes compared to an accident happening in Odense - and the fact that help is provided in these ten minutes can be absolutely decisive whether lives are saved or not ,” says Mark Jørgensen.
When a1-1-2 call concerns an acute illness or minor injury in one of the local areas, an SMS is immediately sent from the call center to the 1-1-2 emergency responders who live in the area in question. Most often, some of the volunteers will be able to arrive within a few minutes and thus begin treatment quickly.
There are several schemes. The Hjerteløper scheme is nationwide, and here the volunteers are called for cardiac arrest. 1-1-2 emergency helpers are only found in some regions and often have more formalized training behind them.
