Not only is it drought-resistant, securing a stabile yield even in less-than-optimal conditions.

The rapeseed plant heavily absorbs nitrogen in the ground, meaning less nitrogen damaging the surrounding eco-system – and more nitrogen for the subsequent cover crop to reuse in the following years.

This in turn means less use of synthetic fertilizer with no reduction of the yield.

Emissions released from burning the harvested crops are also absorbed when the crop grows again, resulting in net-zero direct emissions.

Certifiably sustainable suppliers

Harvested in August, each hectare of rape delivers approximately 4 tons of rapeseeds. Before it’s made into biodiesel, rapeseed oil, rapeseed cakes and glycerin, we acquire the rapeseed directly from farmers or agricultural supply companies.

We have a diverse network of both local and near-shore suppliers. This ensures certainty of delivery while minimizing carbon emissions. Most of the procured rapeseeds are sourced locally from Denmark (~65% of rapeseeds on average) and from the closely-located Baltic states (~30%), which reduces transportation costs and supports local agriculture.

At Emmelev, we only use rapeseed that’s certified sustainable, confirming that our suppliers live up to environmental and sustainability regulations.

Their rapeseed must be cultivated on areas that are, and for a continuous number of years have been, strictly agricultural land. Areas that were previously primeval forest cannot be used.

We are audited yearly to maintain our own certification.

Flourishing fields of rapeseed also make biodiversity thrive.

All our sustainability measures

A landscape with only grain makes what grows in May very limited. But rapeseed growing through spring and summer attracts lots of insects – including bees who gather nectar for honey here.
