The fairytale poet H. C. Andersen had just turned 23 when the mill builder Adrian Johansen stopped on Emmelev hill. He was so fascinated by the place and hoped that he could buy a small piece of land there – because he knew where there was a mill for sale for a reasonable price.

On 1st of July 1838
the dream came true and, together with Maren, Adrian was able to take over a small plot of land of 2 bushels, 2 quarter barges, and 3/4 album, (approx. 1,760 m2) where he built Emmelev Mill.

Until 1868,
Maren and Adrian quickly created a thriving mill business, with son-in-law Peter Simonsen taking over the mill. Today, it is the 6th generation after Maren and Adrian who runs the mill business at Emmelev. The mill has meanwhile been transformed from a village mill into a modern industrial enterprise.
